United Nations Assistant Secretary General and UNITAR Executive Director, Dr. Carlos Lopes, visits Cape Verde

O Secretário-Geral Adjunto das Nações Unidas e Director Executivo do UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research), Dr. Carlos Lopes, efectua, de 16 a 21 de Abril de 2011, uma visita oficial ao país.

The UN Assistant Secretary General and UNITAR (United Nations Institute for Training and Research) Executive Director, Carlos Lopes, performs from April 16th to 21st, 2011, an official visit to the country.

During his stay in Cape Verde, besides participating, on April 18th in St. Vincent, of the opening ceremony of the Diaspora Congress, Dr. Carlos Lopes will also have work meetings, in the capital of the country, with members of the Government, with whom he will discuss the cooperation portfolio with the institution where he is the Executive Director, UNITAR.

At his visit, the UNITAR Executive Director is accompanied by the Rector of ISCTE – Lisbon University Institute, Professor Luis Antero Reto, from which Dr. Carlos Lopes is also president.

It is recalled that Dr. Carlos Lopes was appointed to the position in March 1st, 2007. Furthermore he has exercised the office of UN System Staff College Acting Director since November 2007.

Born in Guinea Bissau, Dr. Lopes has actively contributed to research on development issues. Development and Strategic Planning Specialist, he is author of 22 books and has lectured at universities and academic institutions in Lisbon, Coimbra, Zurich, Uppsala, Mexico, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. He is affiliated with a number of academic networks and helped created several non-governmental organizations and centers of social research, particularly in Africa.
