FAO promotes training workshop on the HORTIVAR System
United Nations, Praia, June 10th, 2011 - In the scope of implementation of the UN One Program signed with the Government of Cape Verde, The FAO, in partnership with the Ministry of Rural Development, promotes a training on HORTIVAR system, which will be held in the city of Praia from June 20th to 26th, 2011.
Note that HORTIVAR is a free database from FAO, about the performance of horticultural cultivars according to the agro-ecological conditions, cultivation practices, occurrence of pests and diseases as well as the chronology of production.
The database has two primary functions that are inter-dependent: data recovery and data entry. Data is retrieved by searching according to various parameters such as: culture, nature, cultivar, country, geographical references, resistance to pests, ecological zone and production systems. The information recorded in the database will be related to locally existing products. HORTIVAR covers six horticultural categories: vegetables, fruits, roots and tubers, fungus, ornamental plants, herbs and spice.
The training will have two components: a theoretical component part, related to the presentation of HORTIVAR, its functions, objectives and search of information for future trainers and; an practical component part, which will be dedicated to the data entry in the system.
The training will be given by Mr. Eduardo Rodrigues Puntel, FAO consultant, and will involve experts from the Ministry of Rural Development and the private sector
