UN-Habitat supports the International Conference on Land Tenure Issues in Cape Verde

The Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment in partnership with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat and the Brazilian, Spanish and Portuguese Cooperation, organized the first International Conference on Land Tenure Issues in Cape Verde, related to Land Policy and Urban Management. The closure was chaired by Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves, who stressed that "the soil in Cape Verde is our oil and our precious stones and so we should manage it, ensuring equal opportunities in access to land".

This meeting represents, according to the Prime Minister, "a privileged space for dialogue between government, local authorities and experts in this field in order to achieve consensus on a strategic vision and establish a land management appropriate plan to democratize access to the soils."

The UN Resident Coordinator in Cape Verde, Petra Lantz, who co-chaired the closing ceremony along with the Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment and the President of the National Association of Municipalities of Cape Verde, stressed the support of this organization to work jointly with the Government in implementing a land agenda in Cape Verde through the Program of Urban Development and Empowerment of Cities in course of preparation.

"Each Cape Verdean should feel like an active player in the management of its territory, members of their habitat, with duties to conserve and sustainably to take the territory that belongs to them", stated the coordinator.

The Conference had a wide participation of local authorities, Government departments and civil society representatives and experts on the issue of land registration in Brazil and Spain, reflecting on their experiences in land management and urban planning. Preceding the closing ceremony took place the official handover of the new cartography to the Municipalities, which will soon be socialized through the media and the Internet.
